Report: 5 November 2021

The Education Committee was created at the end of 2020 to see how the WFSJ could encourage best practice the development of science journalism skills. We received so much interest that we immediately split into three groups: the Higher Education and Accreditation group, the Continuing Professional Development group, and the Mentorship group.

The first two groups have been working together this year (we’ve yet to find a board member to chair the third), both in several official meetings and through online collaboration. Our goal was to think through what is needed to better empower both journalists and trainers.

We started by doing our research: we put out an online form to capture information about both higher education and other courses that were available. This information is now available via an online map. Although we know that our data is far from comprehensive at this point, we hope that publishing it will encourage other course organisers to send us their information, and we will update the map on an ongoing basis.

We have also developed an Education Strategy that we are hoping to discuss at the next WFSJ Board meeting. This includes plans for a new version of the WFSJ Online Course, a mechanism for accrediting educational programs  (from short courses and one-off modules to, eventually, whole degrees), and a skills framework that, we hope, will give science journalists ideas about where they might want to develop their abilities and how they can go about doing that.

We are always looking for people to share their expertise and help us work on these projects. If you’d like to help us out — from making a suggestion to taking on a significant piece of work — please get in touch.
